Ⅳ. Reading(1×15=15)
A
As the first report of the accident came in, Burton was sitting in his office on the top floor of the building. Immediately, realizing the seriousness of the whole incident, he moved to a ground floor room with a small waiting-room to look into the matter himself, leaving his second-in-command(副手)to take over all other cases.
He interviewed the first witness almost at once, making sure everything was done that could be done to put him at ease. However, the witness was obviously nervous and Burton took great pains to go over what he said thoroughly, choosing and checking each word carefully and taking the man’s statement down himself. The witness had called the police and he’d waited until the ambulance began to arrive, then, when the first police car arrived at the scene he’d been asked to report to the station, which was what he had done.
Burton explained that regrettably it would be necessary for him to go to court because of the serious nature of the disaster. More he could not say at present. He’d be thankful if the man could keep in touch with the police.
When he had gone, Burton put his head in his hands and considered before asking for the next witness. The man couldn’t be regarded as a hundred percent witness because he had been behind the wall when the explosion occurred. But in spite of his nerves, Burton had the impression that he was dependable, not afraid of relating himself to it and a fairly exact observer.
Well, there would be other descriptions and no doubt all these would be put into place and the whole picture would become clear. He raised his head and pressed the bell on his desk.
“Next witness, please.” He said.
56. How did the witness feel during the interview?
A. Obviously somewhat frightened.
B. Excited at seeing the incident.
C. Anxious to give a report to the police.
D. Calm and unhurried.
57. The underlined part “a hundred percent witness” most probably means ___.
A. a patient and talkative person.
B. a well-informed witness
C. the only person who was interviewed in the incident.
D. a person who watched the whole incident
58. Burton’s final impression of the witness was that ____.
A. his report was not clear though he was honest.
B. he was afraid of being involved and refused to cooperate with the police.
C. his observation was good but he was not very clear-headed
D. he was a dependable and reasonable witness.

The fact that blind people can see things using other parts of their bodies, apart from their eyes may help us to understand our feeling about color. If they can sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected by color without knowing it.
Salesmen have discovered by experience over a long period of time that sugar sells badly in green wrappings, that blue foods are considered not agreeable to the taste, and that cosmetics should never be packed in brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole subject of color psychology. Some of our preferences for colors are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore connected with calm, while yellow is a day color connected with energy and encouragement. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because they are connected with psychology, also have a direct effect on people' s mind. People in bright red surroundings show an increase in breathing speed, heart-beat and blood pressure; red is exciting. Pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Being exciting, red was chosen as the signal for danger, but a closer study shows that a bright yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm, so fire engines in some advanced areas are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop buses, trucks and cars.    .

61. If people are exposed to pure blue,_____________.
A. their blood pressure rises.         B. they won’t easily feel nervous

Four years working as a white-collar worker in Shanghai, Liu Xiaoqiang feels he’s far from being able to afford his own apartment there.
He makes 5,000 yuan a month as an IT engineer, but that’s only half the average price for a square meter of housing in downtown Shanghai.
When Liu finished college study in 2003, he had vowed(发誓)to buy an apartment in three years at most so that his parents would leave their countryside home in Hubei Province and live with him.
“They spent up their savings to finance my education through college while other villagers had moved into bigger houses,” said Liu. “I just hope houses in Shanghai would be more affordable for home buyers like me.”
A recent survey made by the Shanghai government shows 33 percent of the new settlers in the city think they’d need at least ten years of hard work to buy an apartment, 32 percent said six to ten years and 20 percent said five years.
“If the Chinese government’s control policy could drive down the house prices in big cities, I might make enough for the down payment of a two-bedroom apartment in a year or two,” said Liu, who also took a part-time job.
Sun Lijuan’s family in Shaanxi Province has been in debt since her daughter came down with cancer last summer. The operation cost nearly 200,000 yuan.
“If I had been sick like that I doubt if I would have readily paid the bills,” said Sun, a laid-off worker from a state-owned firm in the provincial capital of Taiyuan.
Sun received a free vocational training (职业培训) program toward the end of the year and is hoping to find a new job this year.
She might not know the gloomy (暗淡的) job market is set to disappoint tens of thousands of new graduates in 2007, let alone laid-off workers.
68. The underlined words “the down payment” probably refer to ____________.
 A. the first payment                                  B. the less payment
C. the whole payment                               D. the remaining payment
69. According to the writer, ______________.
A. Liu could buy an apartment in three years in Shanghai very easily
B. new settlers would need 10 years of hard work to buy an apartment
C. new university graduates could get good jobs easily and quickly
D. it would not be so easy for Sun Liyuan to find a job
70. What would be the best title of this passage?
 A. Chinese dreams for 2007                            B. A survey in 2007
 C. Hard to buy a house                             D. Not easy to find a job
