But even if you’re ready to retire your old TV-or move it into the back bedroom where no one will ever see it-you’re bound to have lots of questions before you make an investment in a new expensive HDTV. You might be wondering about hardware, cost and how to actually receive High Definition programming on your set. “GMA”technology contributor Becky Worley offers this instruction to understanding the complicated world of HD. What is HDTV ①? High definition TV is a richer transmission of television signals that makes for a more vivid viewing experience. HDTV is to standard TV what FM radio is to AM radio. HDTV is crisp, clear and noise-free, with resolution that is at least twice that of analog (模拟信号)television and CD-quality sound. How Do I Get HDTV ②? HDTV signals are broadcast via antennas (天线)in urban areas, and via satellite TV or cable TV. To receive an over-the air HDTV signal, you must live within a certain radius(半径)of an HDTV broadcast antenna and have the proper HDTV tuner (调谐器) or antenna installed in your home. To receive a Cable or Satellite HDTV signal, you must have a proprietary (专利的)HDTV set-top box supplied by your provider. Not all programming is available in HDTV yet, but many network shows and sporting events are currently in HD and many more are converting over. When you watch a DVD on your HDTV, it is not technically HDTV quality, but it will look crisper on your HDTV than on a regular TV. HDTV, HD-Ready TV, and EDTV There are three major terms that will describe the high-end TV sets that are on sale today :HDTV ③ are TV sets that can receive and process over-the-air HD signals. You may need an antenna to receive the HD signal, but an HD tuner is built into the set and can process the signal without any other equipment. If you want to receive an HD signal from your cable or satellite provider, you will need one of the provider’s proprietary set-top boxes. HD-Ready TV are TV sets that need an additional piece of hardware to actually receive the HD signal, such as a stand-alone HD tuner (from $250 and up) or the set-top HDTV box provided by your cable or satellite TV company. EDTV stands for Enhanced Digital Television. The visual quality of an EDTV is better than a standard analog TV, but is not as crisp or bright as a true HDTV. 56.Which of the following best describe the features of HDTV? A.It offers programs with clearer pictures and sound of better quality. B.It offers more interesting and entertaining programs. C.It offers more TV channels and choices of programs. D.It offers program for high technology 57.“HDTV is to standard TV what FM radio is to AM radio.” in this passage is . A.an example to show HDTV is different from common TV. B.an example to show the similarity between HDTV and FM radio. C.a comparison to show HDTV is more advanced than common TV. D.a comparison to show HDTV is better than FM radio. 58.As for the meaning of “HDTV” in different places (①②③) of this article, which of the following statement is TRUE? A.①and ③carry the same meaning while ②carries different meaning. B.①and ②carry the same meaning while ③carries different meaning. C.②and ③carry the same meaning while ①carries different meaning. D.①, ②and ③all carry the same meaning. 59.If you want to receive HDTV program at home, you should have . A.an antenna,an HDTV set and a tuner B.an HD-ready TV set and live within the radius of an HDTV broadcast antenna C.an EDTV set and a set-top box D.an HDTV set, an antenna and live within the radius of an HDTV broadcast antenna B This is supposedly a true story, it happened in a small town of the province of Quebec, Canada, in October 2006.They showed the video surveillance (监视)tape on the news, and even the anchorman(现场报道员)was laughing through it. A robber came into a convenience store wearing a ski mask and a gun wanting to empty the cash register. He took the clerk to the back store and locked her up in the fridge.Unfortunately, when he came back to the front of the store, a customer had come in. So he took off the ski mask and the gloves, and pretended to be filling in for the clerk. The customer wanted a lottery ticket, so he tried to help her out, by pressing a whole bunch of buttons on the machine (thus leaving fingerprints everywhere), but the machine was not cooperating. At the same time, another customer walks in. Finally, he tells the first customer (after about 5 minutes of close-up shots from the camera) that the machine is not working and that he won't be able to help her. The robber makes the sale to the second customer and he leaves as well. The robber then puts back on his gloves to take the money, and hides his face with the palm of his hands as he is leaving. This scene lasted well over 10 minutes, during which, you see and hear the robber as well as in a movie. The day after excerpts(节选) of the tape were aired, the phones at the police station were ringing off the hook. Apparently, even though no reward had been offered, people thought he was too foolish to deserve what he had done! He had to turn himself in that same day. 60.Why did the TV station probably broadcast the video surveillance tape? A.To entertain the viewers. B.To find the robber. C.To introduce a kind of crime. A.A video surveillance tape B.A true story C.A kind robber D.A stupid robber C Those hours practicing piano scales or singing with a choral group weren't for nothing because people with a background in music tend to have a higher education and earn more, according to a new survey. The survey by Harris Interactive, an independent research company, showed that 88 percent of people with a post-graduate education were involved in music while in school, and 83 percent of people earning $150,000 or more had a music education. “Part of it is the discipline itself in learning music, it’s a strict discipline, and in an ensemble(总体) situation, there’s a great deal of working with others. Those types of skills stand you well in careers later in life,” said John Mahlmann, of the National Association for Music Education in Reston, Virginia, which assisted in the survey. In addition to the practical skills gained from studying music, people questioned in the online survey said it also gave them a sense of personal fulfillment. Students who found music to be extremely or very influential to their fulfillment were those who had vocal lessons (声乐课程)and who played in a garage band. Nearly 80 percent of the 2,565 people who took part in the survey last month who were still involved in music felt the same way. “That’s the beauty of music, that they can bring both hard work and enjoyment together, which doesn’t always happen elsewhere,” Mahlmann added in an interview. 64.What does this passage mainly talk about? A.Music is helpful to people’s success. B.Learn music at school, and you’ll definitely succeed. C.Students have vocal lessons and play in a garage band will achieve their fulfillment. D.Music can bring both hard work and enjoyment together 65.Which of the following information is NOT true? A.Music contributes to people’s personal success. B.The National Association for Music Education helped a lot in the survey. C.Music can help people acquire the skills of cooperation with others. D.People with a higher education must have learned music. 66.We can learn from the passage that music provides people with the following EXCEPT ______. A.cooperation B.discipline C.independence D.a sense of achievement 67.What can we infer from the passage? A.Music provided people with some practical advice. B.We should encourage people to learn music. C.Music resulted in people getting higher education and earning more money. D.Nearly 80 percent of the people surveyed last month ever played in a garage band. D When 23-year-old Eric Atienza graduated from college last year, he didn’t have a job.Not wanting to give up his department and move back with his parent, he did what many young Americans are doing: he signed up with a temp agency, which places workers on short-term jobs. Temporary workers such as Atienza make up 20 percent of the US workforce. In 1985, 417,000 workers were classified as temporary help. In 2005,there are more than 2.5 million, according to Labor Department data. Using temporary workers allows companies to increase or decrease the number of staff as their workloads change. It also allows the companies to avoid the costs involved in hiring and firing long-term employees. Many temp agency owners and career specialists say temping is a good way for recent graduates to get experience. “Short-term jobs let the graduates try out different companies to find the best fit,” said Pegi Wheatley, owner of McCall staffing,a San Francisco temp agency. But things don’t always work out that way.“When I started temping, I had this idea that a temporary job could turn full time. It worked for a friend of mine, but that didn’t happen for me,” said Atienza, who quickly became bored with his office work. Atienza stayed with the temp agency because he could earn US$10 an hour doing office work. Other short-term jobs, such as working as a store clerk or in a café, pay about US$7. But there were trade-offs for the higher pay. Because in the US, health insurance is provided through employer, most temps are not suitable for workplace benefits. Atienza ran the risk that an accident or illness would land him in hospital with no ways to pay the bill. Other drawbacks, though less serious, still mean that temping for most graduates is exactly what its name implies—a temporary choice. Instability, gaps between contracts, lack of vacation time and isolation from other employees are often-cited negatives. “Temping give the time to figure out what I wanted to do, because I could pay off my bills. But none of that came from the jobs themselves,” said Atienza who quit temping last month in favor of a full time job. 68.Atienza took a short-term job because________. A.he graduated from college B.he liked to try out different companies C.he wanted to get more experience D.he couldn’t find a long-term job 69.Which is NOT mentioned as an advantage of temping? A.It gives recent graduates experience. B.It enables employers to adjust their workforce. C.A temporary job will turn full time. D.Employers can reduce their costs. 70.Atienza stayed with the temp agency for some time because________. A.he liked his office work. B.he was satisfied with the pay C.his employer provided health insurance D.he hated gaps between contracts 71.What does the word “trade-offs” in Paragraph 5 probably mean? A.benefits B.compromises C.gaps D.disadvantages E In an episode (情节)of Sex and the City, Miranda goes speed-dating, only to discover that her law career is a turn-off to the guys. When she says she’s a flight attendant, however, suddenly she becomes an object of their fantasies. Ray Fisman, a Columbia University economics professor, conducted a two-year study on Americans’ dating preferences. “Men prefer women whom they rate as smarter, but only up to a point,” Fisman told the New York Times. “It turns out that men avoid women whom they perceive(察觉)to be smarter than themselves. The same hold true for measures of career ambition: A woman could be ambitious, just not more ambitious than the man considering her for a date." This perceived bias(偏见) by some men against strong, successful women extends to other parts of social life, including politics. For instance, Hillary Clinton must face these bias as a presidential candidate. The former First Lady appears in public wearing business suits and talking about national and international issues with a lawyer’s cool mind and sharp tongue. However, while her rival Barack Obama gets “fired up”, in the words of his fall campaign slogan, Hillary is careful to remain calm. She often says that she likes the kitchen, perhaps knowing that some may be uncomfortable electing a strong female president who doesn’t exhibit at least some of the more traditional “female” features.

Some say yes. The Internet helps make friends. Chatting on line, students can more freely express their feelings and opinions, and even get help with their foreign language studies. Others, however, think student should not. They say making friends on line is a waste of time, which should be spent more meaningfully on study. Besides, some can be cheated on line. It is my opinion that students should place their study, health and safety before other things. As for friendship, we can easily find it in our classmates and other people around us.
